2013 A plea for volunteers

After Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He went to the synagogue in Nazareth and read from the scroll of Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  Luke 4:18-19 (ESV).  Upon reading this, Jesus declared: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”  Luke 4:21.

Through reading this Scripture, Jesus proclaimed that He is the promised Messiah that was prophesied through the Old Testament.  He also articulated His ministry priorities.  In keeping with the Great Commandment (to love God and to love people) and the Great Commission (to lead others towards becoming disciples of Jesus), Jesus and His followers preached the gospel to the brokenhearted and provided healing to the physically broken.

Oldham Clinic volunteers from nearly 30 different area churches spanning several different denominations are continuing the ministry that Jesus started 2000 years ago.  Over the last three years, the Oldham Clinic has served over 1000 hurting people in our community.  Through your service, “the least of these” among us have been well-fed, provided healing and relief through many committed medical/dental professionals, given improved sight and hearing through free eyeglasses and hearing exams, shown love and caring through our spa, family photo and child care areas and have been clothed and pampered through our clothes closet and gift areas.

In keeping with Jesus’ pattern of touching people both physically and spiritually, each Oldham Clinic guest has an opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ through our guest “Advocates” and evangelism team.  From the registration to the exit areas – and every ministry area in between – each volunteer has the opportunity to “be Jesus” to those whom Jesus calls us to serve.  I have heard many stories of guests coming to know Jesus as Lord and Savior and experiencing life change because of what God has done through Oldham Clinic volunteers.

Volunteers also experience life change.  Five years ago, I served as a guest Advocate at an area Touched Twice clinic.  I was paired with Howard, a man in his mid-50s who was homeless at the time.  During the three hours that I spent with Howard, I learned that he had a family, had fallen on hard times and that he desperately wanted to find his way to God.  Although I certainly didn’t have all the answers to Howard’s questions, I was able to share my personal story with him, to point him to Jesus and to lead him to a day of blessing.  I ended my time with Howard by giving him a Bible and praying for him.  He remarked that he didn’t remember the last time that he had a Bible of his own.

All I did was say “yes” to being a part of God blessing Howard.  However, when I left the clinic, I felt as though I had been the one to receive the bigger blessing.  I am sure that many of you could share similar experiences.

I pray that you and your church home will join us at the 2013 Oldham Clinic, which will be held on Saturday, August 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at LaGrangeBaptistChurch.  We especially need guest Advocates.  As we hope to serve over 500 guests at this year’s clinic, we need 250-300 Advocates in order to individually love and serve each guest.  We will hold identical Advocate trainings on Tuesday, August 20 and Thursday, August 22, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

I look forward to serving alongside each of you on August 24.  I cannot wait to witness God work through His Church!

In Christ,

Ben T. White

2013 Planning is in full swing!

Anybody interested in helping to plan the 2013 Oldham Clinic is welcome to attend our monthly planning sessions, which are held on the first Monday of each month at LaGrange Baptist Church. This is where we make decisions on what services might be offered and who can help us the most in those areas.
It’s a wonderful gathering of concerned Christians  who have a passion for serving others. It’s a very simple concept: love each other and offer help to those in need who might not find it in other places.
Remaining planning dates are:
  • July 1
  • August 5
We hope to see you there!
